We are looking for a detail-oriented and motivated GIS Technician I to join our growing team. Position Summary

The GIS Technician I will support the GIS Supervisor in maintaining cadastral maps and parcel data for assigned clients. This position involves reading and interpreting survey documents, transcribing metes and bounds into GIS using ArcGIS Pro, and ensuring high-quality data management in accordance with BIS GIS Maintenance Standards. The ideal candidate is comfortable using ArcGIS Pro, understands surveying principles, and has a working knowledge of parcel fabric, topology tools, and GIS editing workflows.

This position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to work within a team, and excellent communication skills for interacting with clients and internal staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • GIS Data Editing & Maintenance:
    • Use ArcGIS Pro to update and maintain parcel data, perform splits/merges, and adjust property boundaries.
    • Knowledge of building maps and plats from ArcGIS Pro.
    • Transcribe survey calls using the COGO traverse tool.
    • Apply topology rules to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
    • Work with Parcel Fabric and understand its implementation within cadastral workflows.
  • Survey & Land Records Interpretation:
      • Read and interpret metes and bounds descriptions from deeds, plats, and surveys.
      • Verify accuracy of parcel changes against reference materials and survey documents.
  • CAMA System & Data Integration:
    • Understand how GIS parcel data integrates with Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) systems.
    • Link parcel records to appraisal district account rolls for accurate assessment data.
  • Workflow & Task Management:
    • Use BIS’s document management system to track assigned maintenance tasks.
    • Ensure document review timelines are met, maintaining a two-week turnaround on assigned work.
    • Provide status updates and communicate document-related issues to the GIS Supervisor.
  • Client Communication & Support:
    • Respond to client inquiries regarding GIS data and parcel updates.
    • Use Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Zendesk to document work and assist with technical support as needed.
  • Technical Growth & Continuous Improvement:
    • Stay updated on ArcGIS Pro tools and best practices.
    • Knowledge and use of ArcGIS Online.
    • Learn and implement Python scripting and GIS automation where applicable.
    • Participate in BIS team meetings and contribute to process improvements.

Qualifications & Skills

Required:
    • 1+ years of experience working with ArcGIS Pro or software equivalent for editing and maintaining spatial data.
    • Strong knowledge of parcel mapping and cadastral data management.
    • Ability to read and transcribe survey documents, deeds, and metes and bounds descriptions.
    • Experience using the COGO traverse tool to draw out legal descriptions.
    • Familiarity with parcel topology, geometry validation, and spatial accuracy checks.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established GIS maintenance procedures.
    • Basic proficiency in Microsoft 365 tools (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Excel, Word).
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 

Preferred:
    • Experience with Parcel Fabric workflows in ArcGIS Pro.
    • Familiarity with CAMA systems and GIS data integration with property appraisal data.
    • Understanding of SQL databases and attribute table management in GIS.
    • Understanding of web based mapping technologies.
    • Some experience with Python scripting for GIS automation.
    • Prior experience working with county appraisal districts, title companies, or land records.
